Empathy in a Non-Empathic World
Instructor: David MacIsaac, PhD, ABPP

6 Hours: Four 90-minute sessions

In this managed care, fast paced and instant cure environment, do we have time for empathy and the gradual development that accrues from such a treatment approach? Come and have a glimpse of Self Psychology, one of the most significant analytic developments since Freud.

Learn why empathy is such a radical perspective in understanding and explaining our patients inner life. Find out why the theory of the self accords so accurately with human experience.

Finally, learn about Crayton Rowe's recently discovered undifferentiated selfobject transference that complements Kohut's original self-selfobject theory and offers a new slant on such symptoms as eating disorders, addictions, suicide, obsessive-compulsive and AD/HD behavior.

Applying Kohut's Major Contributions to the Treatment of Parents and Children
Joanna Hulton, PhD

This workshop will demonstrate how a parent understands his child from a self psychological perspective, and the insights that an adult gain into his own childhood via his parent-child interactions.

The selfobject experiences needed for healthy development will be explored. Case vignettes will illustrate how a parent's unmet needs can distort the child's experience of his own needs.
